Why Animals Eat Their Young

Actually, lots of animals eat their young. Polar bears, beetles, sand gobies, hamsters, spiders, fish… they all do it. I know why they do it. I have a scenario in mind for the momma spider. She has been working all day on her web – removing bugs, repairing gaps, trapping prey – and every time she turns around she has a few offspring ‘undoing’ all of her ‘doings’.
