Proof I Use to Measure What is True

I’ve had a song spinning in my head since early yesterday morning.  In the midst of a sweet, airy song, about loving a girl, It’s you has a lyric that keeps dancing in my mind.

“You’re the proof I use to measure what is true.”

Do you subscribe to horoscopes?  I don’t.  First of all, the Bible is clear about astrology and mysticism.  My horoscope is not the proof I use to measure what is true.  I’m a Pisces which describes me well on a surface level.  Sorta.  Not really.  Here are the character traits of my fishy horoscope:

Traits of a Pisces….

  • Shy (Heck no.  Have you met me?)
  • Romantic  (I love personal space and affection is not my love language)
  • Trustworthy  (Sure.  Who would say no to that?)
  • Aloof  (I suppose this is quite true)
  • Dreamy  (Very much so)
  • Creative  (Absolutely)
  • Understanding  (To a degree, but I think my A.D.D. severely limits this ability)
  • Unrealistic  (Heck yes)
  • Impractical  (My default setting is ridiculous, but I’m very grounded)

Likes…

  • Romance  (I hate chick-flicks, and gushy novels, so I say “no”)
  • Nature  (Yeppers)
  • Ambient music  (Only if I’m trying to induce vomiting)
  • Poetry  (I’m a huge fan of limericks, and maybe Frost, but that’s it)
  • Mystical settings  (I hate unicorns, and fairies, and trolls.  No thank you)
  • Being loved / wanted  (Really?  Who on the face of the earth doesn’t like this?)
  • Freedom  (I wonder whose sign craves imprisonment?)
  • Privacy  (Yes.  Stop looking at me.)

Dislikes…

  • Noise  (Since I have 2 kids and music cranked most of the time, this doesn’t seem like an option)
  • Crowds  (I’m very social and extroverted, but I am a big fan of intimate settings)
  • Dirt & ugliness  (God made dirt so dirt won’t hurt)
  • Garish objects  (Couldn’t be more true)
  • Being reminded  (No. I set reminders and use google calendar)

It goes on to say, “Pisces witness to the difficult task of straddling this divide – between the human and the divine. More than any other sign, perhaps, Pisces experiences normal human life as limited, for it excludes so much that can make life more complete.”  So every Christian who has even the most vague understanding of the kingdom of God and the tension of the “already” and the “not yet” must be a Pisces.  I had no idea.

I know what you’re thinking.  Get on with it, Rebecca… what is your point?  My point is quite simple; what is the proof you use to measure what is true?  It would be foolish for my hope to rest in some astrological prediction.  According to my description, I’m unrealistic and dreamy.  Thankfully, I’m not described as an idiot.

With all the methods to our madness, we have to stand on truth.  Check out Hebrews 6:17-19…

17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.

The truth can’t be the truth if it changes.  Does your proof rest in the great I Am?  The Alpha and Omega?  Is your belief in the one true God, the unchanging God, an anchor for your soul?  If you have hope in God’s promise, you’re proof is planted firmly.  Do you believe God?  Do you trust him to deliver what he’s promised?

If you attend Friday morning’s Bible study, please don’t forget to read Hebrews chapters 5-9.
